On Wye Oak’s fifth studio album, The Louder I Call, The Faster it Runs, frontwoman Jenn Wasner masterfully navigates the guitar in her strongest manner yet. She doesn’t shy away from distortion, leaning into these effects to give the record a sense of unrest and electric energy. Her vocals are just as powerful; highly layered and atmospheric. Bandmate Andy Stack plays off of Wasner’s parts with drum machine beats and synth pads. The title track of the record encompasses all of these qualities, topped off with a true pop twist. To us listeners, it’s pretty clear that the members of Wye Oak have developed a sense of confidence and presence that really sets them apart in an ever-growing genre of indie rock.
